The Beaverton Town Hall has been designated as being of architectural and historical interest under the Ontario Heritage Act, R.S.O. 1990
The Village of Beaverton was incorporated in 1884; the original town hall, shared between the village and the surrounding Township of Thorah since 1846, was located on the north side of Simcoe Street on the site of the existing hardware store. The first discussions in regard to a new town hall took place between the two Councils as early as 1887. It was intended that a new and larger town hall would better serve the residents of each municipality.
Bylaw 142, Township of Thorah, authorized the sale of debentures to raise $5000 toward their cost of the new town hall building. A similar by-law was adopted by the Village of Beaverton (By-law 75) authorizing the sale of debentures to raise $7000. Both by-laws were adopted in early 1910.
Architects J. Harvey Self and W. Fletcher Shepherd, Toronto, were retained by the village and township to prepare suitable plans for the new town hall. A preliminary cost estimate was prepared in the amount of $12625 to complete the new town hall, provide a one-storey market area, and tower to support a bell of medium weight. Tenders were let in April 1910 for the completion of the town hall.
The new town hall was completed in 1911. An assembly was held on August 22, 1911, representing almost all of the families within the village and township to celebrate the opening. Speeches were made by Reeve L.J. Cameron of Beaverton and Reeve Donald Brown of Thorah Township. The first political meeting held in the town hall took place in September of 1911.
The town hall continued to be used for municipal purposes until 1996. The town hall is now shared by a number of community groups including the Town Hall Players theatre group, a community policing office, an employment centre operated in partnership with the Federal government, and the Beaverton Seniors' Golden Friendship Club.
