The Cannington Town Hall has been designated as being of architectural and historical interest under the Ontario Heritage Act, R.S.O. 1990:

The Village of Cannington received incorporation status in 1879. This building was erected in 1887 for a total cost of $7000. The lot was purchased from a Mr. James Johnston for a cost of $700. The bricking was supplied by a Mr. John Wakelin for $862.50 and the general contractor, Mr. Fred Bick, received the sum of $5100. The Town Bell cost the municipality $272 inclusive of $65 duty.

The new Town Hall contained the Council chambers, municipal offices, fire hall, police office and jail and, until 1971, the village's library. The second floor of the building housed an auditorium which was used by the community for plays, musicals, and various community events throughout the years. Events held at the Town hall included a thanksgiving service to honour Queen Victoria in 1897 as well as services held to celebrate the armistice on November 11, 1918. The first moving-picture show held in Cannington was presented by the Sunday school of the Methodist Church in the hall's auditorium in 1902. The Town Hall was also used for concerts to celebrate the 50th, 75th, and 80th anniversaries of the village's incorporation.

The building continued to be used for municipal purposes following the amalgamation of the village into the Township of Brock in 1974; regular meetings of Council and/or committees were held in this building until the new central municipal administration building was opened in 1996 on the corner of Laidlaw and Cameron streets. Since 1996, the building's main floor has been used by the Board of Education and the Cannington & Area Historical society; the auditorium has not been used for quite some time.
