Truth and Reconciliation
The Township of Brock honoured the intent of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with a flag raising ceremony today, September 29th, 2022. This day of reflection marks one step on the long and important journey towards reconciliation.
Mayor John Grant raised the flag of the Chippewas of Georgina and spoke with sincerity at the Municipal Administration Building.
Message from the Mayor:
Aaniin
Good Morning,
It is important to begin each public gathering with a Land and Territorial Acknowledgement, to recognize the Indigenous People for being good stewards of the land and environment, here where we are meeting today. The Township of Brock has traditionally been a hunting and fishing ground for First Nations People. We reside on and benefit from the Williams Treaty Territories, the land of the Mississaugas and Chippewas. May we share the land as long as the sun rises, the grass grows and the river flows.
Today, we raise the flag of the Chippewas of Georgina Island to recognize the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, a day of remembrance that symbolizes the treatment of Indigenous People. To reflect on the systemic attempt to wipe out a nation and a culture. To recognize the justification in law and the Doctrine of Discovery of the residential schools and the lasting harm.
May we learn our history and be a part of healing. May we learn from those who were first on these lands.
Raising this flag represents that Truth and Reconciliation is more than a one-day event, rather it symbolizes that from this day forward we seek the truth and to seek reconciliation.

The flags will remain at half-mast at the Municipal Building for one week in honour of the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities.
