Township of Brock Emergency Operations Update - April 2, 2025

Communication lines at the Township of Brock Municipal office have been restored and our staff are sorting through the messages concerning the ice storm. New Special Weather Statement in Effect
Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for Brock for Wednesday, April 2 to Thursday, April 3, 2025, for freezing rain with ice accretion of 4 to 8 mm on some surfaces. Rain, heavy at times. Total rainfall amounts of 20 to 40 mm. Locally, higher amounts are possible in thunderstorms. Visit Ontario.ca/floods for the latest details.
Brock Libraries
All library programs are canceled the week of April 1-5 as we focus on supporting our community in recovering from the ice storm and power outages. Branches are open with heat, power, and internet. Stop by to warm up, say hello, or just enjoy a quiet place to read.
Cannington Branch is open 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Sunderland branch is open 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Beaverton branch is open from 2:00 p.m. -5:00 p.m.
Sunderland’s Book Sale on Saturday will go ahead.

Township Facilities and Services for Wednesday April 2, 2025
With the power restored in parts of Beaverton the Foster Hewitt Memorial Community Centre is now open as a warming/showering centre. Most Township of Brock facilities will remain closed to the public on Tuesday, April 2, 2025. The following locations are open as warming and charging centres.
- Municipal Administration Building located at 1, Cameron St E. Cannington, Open 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.
- Foster Hewitt Memorial Community Centre located 176 Main Street, Beaverton. Open 8:30 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.
- Rick MacLeish memorial Community Centre 91 Elliot Street, Cannington. Open 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
- Sunderland Memorial Arena located at 20 Park St. Sunderland, Open 8:30 a.m.- 8:30 p.m.
- Sunderland Fire Station located at 217 River St., Sunderland, Open 8:30 a.m.- 4: 30 p.m.
Potable Drinking Water
The following locations are open for gathering potable drinking water. Please bring your own container.
- Sunderland Memorial Arena, 20 Park Street, Sunderland
- Rick MacLeish Memorial Arena 91 Elliot St. Cannington

Showering Facilities
Residents have access to the showering facilities at the following locations. Please bring your own towels and soap.
- Sunderland Fire Station located at 217 River St.: Sunderland Open 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
- Sunderland Memorial Arena, 20 Park Street, Sunderland Open 8:30 a.m. – 8:30 p.m.
- Foster Hewitt Memorial Centre located 176 Main Street, Beaverton. Open 8:30 – 11:00 p.m.
- Rick MacLeish Memorial Community Centre 91 Elliot Street, Cannington. Open 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Clean-up Update
Township and Durham Region Operations crews are fully engaged with clean up in Municipal and Regional areas. Timelines associated with clean-up are unknown at this time. We anticipate it will take most of this week before all roads will be opened. Updates will continue to be provided on the Township and Durham Region website.
Roads
Concession 7 Brock is closed due to downed trees, powerlines and debris. Barricades and road closure signs are in place. Please do not remove these from their locations and do not drive around the barriers. These are in place for public safety.
Traffic Lights
There are significant highway intersections along Hyw 7 and Hyw 12 that are still with no traffic lights out, the intersections must be treated as a four-way stop, where drivers must come to a complete stop and yield to the vehicle on their right if they arrive simultaneously.
Garbage and Waste
Large waste bins will be available from the Region of Durham this week for residents to dispose of kitchen and household waste as needed at each arena:
- Sunderland Memorial Arena, at 20 Park St. Sunderland
- Foster Hewitt Memorial Community Centre, 176 Main St., Beaverton
- Rick MacLeish Memorial Community Centre, 91 Elliot St. Cannington
Waste collection will continue on your regular scheduled pick up dates.
Tree debris
Urban area residents can bring tree/road debris to the curb/roadway but must follow the following criteria. Pick up to be determined. The Township is in communications with contractors to get brush picked up. This process will take a couple weeks to complete.
- Brush must be securely tied in bundles up to one metre (three feet) long and 76 centimetres (30 inches) wide.
- No branch should be more than 10 centimetres (4 inches) in diameters.

Fitness Programing
All classes are canceled April 1- April 5, 2025, and a credit has been added to registered participants online accounts. Please be advised the Spring Fitness Session start date has been delayed to April 7, 2025, and run until June 28, 2025. Registration has been extended until 12:00 p.m. on Monday, April 7th.
Facility Rentals
Any Township facilities that have been booked privately from March 30 – April 2, 2025, will be canceled and issued a refund. Please check our website for updates on when Township facilities will re-open for private bookings. This will not affect the Sunderland Maple Syrup Festival.
Arenas
Rick MacLeish Memorial Community Centre open as a warming, charging, shower facility only.

Parks and Playgrounds
All Township of Brock parks and playgrounds are closed until further notice. Please do not access any parks or playgrounds at this time due to safety concerns.
Property Clean Up Hazards
If you begin yard cleanup, exercise extreme caution. Residents are encouraged to hire a professional, if possible, especially the elderly. Hazards such as downed wires, sharp debris, and unstable branches may not be visible and can pose serious risks. Always treat all wires as live and keep a safe distance.
Schools
Please visit the Durham District School Board and Durham Catholic School Board websites for updates on which schools will be open for Wednesday April 3 and the remainder of the week.

There are still areas of the Township of Brock that power is still out. Some areas will be restored today. Check with your local provider for updates.

Pefferlaw Lions Club has opened the Pefferlaw Lions Community Centre today from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and will be offering residents affected by the power outage 3 free hot meals. Breakfast at 9:00 a.m., Lunch at 12:00 p.m. and dinner at 5:00 p.m. All meals will run until food runs out. Located at 38 Pete’s Lane, Pefferlaw. 705-437-1362
