media release

Brock, ON- Township of Brock Mayor Walter Schummer has announced his resignation effective immediately with a written letter to the Clerk and through his social media channels on Monday May 26, 2025.

“The decision to resign as the Mayor of Brock is the most difficult decision of my life but I do so with the best interest of the municipality and my health in mind. The issues in my life have been ongoing for some time and it is taking a toll on me which has caused me to not be the kind of Mayor the residents of the Township expect and deserve.”

“I want to thank Mayor Schummer for his years of dedication to Council, staff, and the residents of Brock. On a more personal note, I want to thank him for his support and guidance over the past eighteen months. His kindness, patience, and advice have meant a lot to me during my transition into the CAO role.” Says Chief Administrative Officer Michelle Willson. “I also want to take this opportunity to reassure Brock residents that our Leadership Team is committed to ensuring that the important work of the municipality continues uninterrupted during this transitional period.”

Mayoral By-Election

In accordance with the Municipal Act and next steps, the Province’s “strong mayor” legislation requires a by-election be held to fill the vacancy. At the next meeting held on June 9, 2025, Council will declare the Mayor’s office to be vacant and pass a by-law requiring a by-election. Once the by-law is passed there will be a nomination period between 30 and 60 days and then the by-election will be held 45 days after that. A new mayor will be in place sometime in September.

Acting Mayor

In terms of governance, business as usual will continue, with Regional Councillor Mike Jubb, as Deputy Mayor, assuming the role and responsibility of presiding as chair during future council meetings until the by-election is held.

Brock is committed to ensuring that the public is made aware of all important decisions and milestone dates related to filling the Mayor’s seat and will share regular updates throughout the process.

If you require any further information on the election process, please contact clerks@brock.ca
