The Township of Brocks Awards of Merit 2025 Winners

Last night it was an honour to host the first annual Township of Brock Awards of Merit at the stunning Sunderland Town Hall. Last nights event recognizes the invaluable contributions made within our community by many outstanding citizens and volunteers,

Councillor Lynn Campbell presented the Arts, Heritage and Culture Award to Brock Arts and Culture who has been instrumental in promoting the Arts heritage and culture within the Township of Brock. This volunteer group is very deserving to be the inaugural recipient of this award with some notable projects like the Fish Art Installation at the Harbour, Maple Leaf painting contest for the promotion of the Maple Syrup Festival and many other projects with the local schools and parks. Thank you for your contributions to our community!

Councillor Cria Pettingill presented the Environment and Climate Change Champion Award to Sarah Cowley. Sarah is the driving force that has transformed Beaverton waterfront into a thriving natural oasis with her tireless dedication to the Blossom Trail. Through countless volunteer hours, Sarah has planted hundreds of native trees, shrubs and plants that has created a natural habitat for pollinators, birds, and wildlife. Her leadership, passion, and persistence have left a lasting legacy, making her a true champion for the environment and her community.

Councillor Peter Frank presented the Community Services Group or Club Award to the Beaverton Legion Branch 135 who supports many community initiatives through the years and most recently during this year’s ice storm. The Beaverton Legion was instrumental in supporting the municipality and all our residents during a time of crisis. As one of the designated Emergency Disaster Relief buildings in our region they serve as a safe and supportive space for those in need, offering essential services and resources to assist with disaster relief efforts. The Beaverton Legion also hosts a wide variety of community events and offers numerous programs specifically for seniors and veterans providing them with opportunities to connect, engage and enjoy a sense of belonging. Congratulations!

Councillor Angela Canavan presented the Social Development Award to The Nourish and Develop Foundation (TDNF), who have been a cornerstone of Support in Brock Township and our rural areas. TNDF offers a wide range of equity-driven programs including a choice-based food bank, Mobile Food Market, community kitchen, transitional housing, and a social service hub. Their work not only addresses urgent needs but also empowers individuals and families to build lasting stability and wellbeing. TNDF continues to shine as a powerful force for connection, resilience, and hope in our community.

Councillor Clair Doble presented the Sports and Recreation Award to Sherri Parr who is a remarkable leader who has transformed both her players and the Sunderland Stingerz Association. Sherri has created an environment where young athletes not only learn the fundamentals of the game but also develop confidence, resilience, and lasting friendships. Sherri has proven herself not only as an outstanding coach but also as a true catalyst for growth and success in her community. Congratulations!

Mayor Mike Jubb presented the Volunteer of the Year Award to Ken Jackson who is a proud long-time resident of Sunderland and a devoted member of the Sunderland Lions Club. Ken has played an instrumental role in supporting our community through his leadership of the annual Scrap Metal Drive, which has raised an incredible amount of money for local development projects. Ken’s generosity, dedication, and community spirit set an inspiring example of what it means to give back, and we are truly fortunate to have him as part of our community.

Councillor Angela Canavan presented the Brock Accessibility Award to George Pilgrim, owner of Pilgrims Home Hardware located in Sunderland. George Pilgrim is a shining example of professionalism, generosity, and community spirit and at his store is an accessible and welcoming environment. George has installing a ramp for those with mobility challenges and offering personalized service, from phone orders to expert advice. Supported by a loyal and dedicated staff who share his values of courtesy and professionalism, George has built not only a successful business but also a legacy of integrity and compassion. Congratulations George.
