Township of Brock Emergency Operations Update – April 3, 2025

The Township of Brock is committed to providing residents with up-to-date information on the ice storm relief efforts. Please continue to check in on neighbours and loved ones who may still be without power.

Special Weather Statement

Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for Brock for Thursday, April 3, 2025. Strong wind gusts may develop later this morning into this afternoon.  An unstable airmass may bring a few hours of strong wind gusts up to 85 km/h later this morning into this afternoon. Tree damage and utility interruption are possible with the recent freezing rain and rainfall event over southern Ontario.

Township Facilities and Services for Thursday April 3, 2025

Most Township facilities are now open, and the following locations are operating as warming and charging centres during the hours indicated below. Regular scheduled programing will run as planned April 3, 2025 in the Foster Hewitt Memorial Community Centre. Manilla Community Hall is closed due to power outage.

  • Municipal Administration Building located at 1, Cameron St E. Cannington.  8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.
  • Foster Hewitt Memorial Community Centre, 176 Main Street, Beaverton. 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. 
  • Rick MacLeish memorial Community Centre 91 Elliot Street, Cannington.  8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. 
  • Sunderland Memorial Arena located at 20 Park St. Sunderland.  8:30 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. 
  • Sunderland Fire Station located at 217 River St., Sunderland. 8:30 a.m.- 4: 30 p.m. 
Potable Drinking Water

The following locations are open for gathering potable drinking water. Please bring your own containers.

  • Sunderland Memorial Arena, 20 Park Street, Sunderland
  • Rick MacLeish Memorial Arena 91 Elliot St. Cannington
  • Foster Hewitt Memorial Community Centre located 176 Main Street, Beaverton.
Showering Facilities

Residents have access to the showering facilities at the following locations and times. Please bring your own towels and soap.

  • Sunderland Fire Station located at 217 River Street: Sunderland. 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. 
  • Sunderland Memorial Arena, 20 Park Street, Sunderland. 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • Foster Hewitt Memorial Centre located 176 Main Street, Beaverton. 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • Rick MacLeish Memorial Community Centre 91 Elliot Street, Cannington. 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • Georgina Leisure Pool located at 5279 Black River Road, Sutton. Call for hours 905-722-1429
  • Uxbridge Pool located at 1 Parkside Drive, Uxbridge. Call for hours 905-852-7831
Municipal Road Closures
  • Ridge Road from Highway 7 to 203 m south of Highway 7. Road is closed due to a cross-culvert malfunction. All civic addresses on Ridge Road between Hwy 7 and Concession 7 Brock can be accessed from Concession 7 Brock.
  • Cedar Beach Road from Thorah Concession Road 5 to 272 m north of Thorah Concession Road 5. Road is closed due to low hanging hydro wires. Addresses 10 - 44 can be accessed from Thorah Concession 5.
  • Brock Concession Road 2 at Sideroad 18 to 28 m west of Simcoe Street. Road is closed due to downed Tree in hydro wires. Addresses S1825 to S1880 can be accessed from Sideroad 18, addresses S2385 to S1930 can be accessed from Simcoe Street.
  • Brock Concession Road 7 from Sideroad 17 to Sideroad 17A. Road closed due to flooding
Traffic Lights

There are significant highway intersections along Hwy 7 and Hwy 12 that are still with traffic lights out, the intersections must be treated as a four-way stop. Drivers must come to a complete stop and yield to the vehicle on their right if they arrive simultaneously.

Garbage and Waste

The Waste Management Facility in Brock will remain closed due to a power outage until further notice.

Residents are asked to please place any food waste resulting from the power outage in your green bin for regular curbside collection. Overflow material will be accepted. Place overflow materials in a clear bag or cardboard box.

Large waste bins will be available from the Region of Durham this week for residents to dispose of kitchen and household waste as needed at each arena. Please do not leave garbage bags beside the bins. If unable to put into the bin, please take back home for regular pickup.

Waste collection will continue on your regular scheduled pickup dates.

Tree debris and leaf and yard waste

Urban area residents can bring tree/road debris to the curb/roadway and pick up is to be determined. The Township is in communications with contractors to get brush picked up. This process will take a couple weeks to complete.

Storm related yard waste will be accepted temporarily at the Durham Waste Management Facility in Oshawa and Scugog. Waste Management Facility in Brock will also be accepting yard waste temporarily once it reopens. Standard fees will be waived for dedicated loads of yard waste. 

Fire Department 
There is a temporary Burn Permit Exemption for Brock residents to help with clearing downed brush and trees. Brock residents can burn without a permit from 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM daily until April 17, 2025—as long as regular permit guidelines are followed. Before you burn, call Fire Prevention at 705-432-2355 x.233 and leave a voicemail with:
  • Your name
  • Burn address
  • Phone number
Burning outside of 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM still requires a permit.
If your property doesn’t meet burn requirements, collect debris for disposal or visit the transfer station. Visit the Brock Fire Department Facebook page for more updates.
Parks and Playgrounds

All Township of Brock parks and playgrounds will remain closed until further notice. Please do not access any parks or playgrounds at this time due to safety concerns and clean up efforts.

Brock Libraries

All library programs are canceled the week of April 1-5 Branches are open with heat, power, and internet.

Cannington Branch is open 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Sunderland branch is open 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Beaverton branch is open from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Please visit the Durham District School Board and Durham Catholic School Board websites for updates on which schools will be open for Friday April 4.

Nourish and Develop Foundation Hub is open today from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Offering a warm place to rest and connect, hot meals, snacks, drinks, washrooms, Wi-Fi, and charging stations. Located at 16 York Street, Cannington. 705-432-2444

Pefferlaw Lions Club has opened the Pefferlaw Lions Community Centre April 3, 2025 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and will be offering residents affected by the power outage 3 free hot meals. Breakfast at 9:00 a.m., Lunch at 12:00 p.m. and dinner at 5:00 p.m. All meals will run until food runs out. Located at 38 Pete’s Lane, Pefferlaw. 705-737-1362
