Township of Brock Emergency Operations Update – April 4, 2025

The Township of Brock is committed to providing residents with up-to-date information on the ice storm relief efforts. Please continue to check in on neighbours and loved ones who may still be without power.

Durham Region

Any issues on Regional Roads can be reported by calling 311 or reporting a concern on their website www.durham.ca/en/regional-government/report-an-issue.aspx.

Township Facilities and Services

The following locations are operating as warming, charging and shower centres during the hours indicated below.

Brock Township Emergency Centre at the Beaverton Royal Canadian Legion

At today’s Emergency Control Group meeting arrangements were finalized for a Township Emergency Centre which will provide a warm refuge and meals for residents still without hydro. This emergency centre located at the Beaverton Legion, located at 517 Mara Road, Beaverton.

Hours of Operation and meal times are below.

  • Friday April 4, 5:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
    • Dinner will be provided 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • Saturday April 5, 9:00 a.m. -11:00 p.m.
    • Breakfast served from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.  
    • Lunch served from 11:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
    • Dinner 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • Sunday April 6, 2025,  9:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.
    • Breakfast served from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
    • Lunch served from 11:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
    • Dinner 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Ontario Volunteer Emergency Response Team (OVERT) will perform wellness checks on people in the Township and notify those in need of emergency services of the Beaverton Emergency Centre location.  If you know of anyone who needs this assistance, please pass this information on to them or notify the Township at 705-878-6004.

Regional Social Services staff are also participating in this initiative and will be on site to provide additional assistance to anyone requiring it.

Transit services: For those in need, please call Durham Region Transit at 1-866-247-0055 to see if transportation to emergency centres can be arranged.

Potable Drinking Water

The following locations are open for gathering potable drinking water from outside taps. Please bring your own containers.

  • Foster Hewitt Memorial Community Centre,176 Main Street, Beaverton.
Fire Department 
There is a temporary Burn Permit Exemption for Brock residents to help with clearing downed brush and trees. Brock residents can burn without a permit from 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM daily until April 17, 2025—as long as regular permit guidelines are followed. Visit the Brock Fire Department Facebook page guidelines.
Before you burn, call Fire Prevention at 705-432-2355 x.233 and leave a voicemail with:
  • Your name
  • Burn address
  • Phone number
Burning outside of 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM still requires a permit.
If your property doesn’t meet burn requirements, collect debris for disposal or visit the transfer station. Visit the Brock Fire Department Facebook page for more updates.

Municipal Road Closures

  • Ridge Road from Highway 7 to 203 m south of Highway 7. Road is closed due to a cross-culvert malfunction. All civic addresses on Ridge Road between Hwy 7 and Concession 7 Brock can be accessed from Concession 7 Brock.
  • Cedar Beach Road from Thorah Concession Road 5 to 272 m north of Thorah Concession Road 5. Road is closed due to low hanging hydro wires. Addresses 10 - 44 can be accessed from Thorah Concession 5.
  • Brock Concession 7 is closed by Sideroad 18 A due to downed wires.
  • Thorah Concession 2 is closed between Sideroad 17 and Highway 12 due to cross culvert replacement

Regional Roads

Regional crews are working day and night in cooperation with the municipality to clear roads of debris from the recent storms as quickly as possible.

Residents who encounter traffic signals without power are reminded to treat the intersection as an all-way stop and proceed with caution. To report a problem with a traffic signal, call the Region of Durham Works Department at 311 (within Regional boundary limits) during business hours, or at 905-576-9991 in the evening and on weekends or holidays.

Traffic Lights

There are significant highway intersections along Hwy 7 and Hwy 12 that are still with traffic lights out, the intersections must be treated as a four-way stop. Drivers must come to a complete stop and yield to the vehicle on their right if they arrive simultaneously.

Waste Management

The Region’s Waste Management Facility in Brock has re-opened and will accept storm-related yard waste temporarily. Standard fees will be waived for dedicated loads of storm-related yard waste until further notice. Please visit durham.ca/WMF for more information. 

Residents who have fallen branches and trees on their property can prepare their brush for the seasonal leaf and yard waste collection. Bi-weekly seasonal leaf and yard waste collection begins next week (April 7) for the Township of Brock, Township of Uxbridge and Township of Scugog. Brush must be securely tied in bundles up to one metre (four feet) long and 76 centimetres (30 inches) wide. No branch should be more than 10 centimetres (4 inches) in diameter.

Temporary bins have been set up for household waste related to the recent storm for Township of Brock residents only at the following locations:

  • Foster Hewitt Memorial Community Centre, 176 Main Street, Beaverton
  • Rick MacLeish Memorial Community Centre, 91 Elliot Street, Cannington
  • Sunderland Memorial Arena, 20 Park Street, Sunderland

Residents are asked to please place any food waste resulting from the power outage in your green bin for regular curbside collection. Overflow material will be accepted and can be placed in clear bags or cardboard boxes next to your green bins on your regular waste collection day. Green bins cannot weigh more than 20 kilograms (44 pounds).

Parks and Playgrounds

All Township of Brock parks and playgrounds will remain closed until further notice. Please do not access any parks or playgrounds at this time due to safety concerns and clean up efforts.

There are still pockets of the Township of Brock that power is out. Some areas will be restored today. Check with your local provider for updates.

The Pefferlaw Lions Community Centre is open 24 Hours as a reception centre. Grab a coffee, meal, charge your devise and get warm. Pets are welcome but should be crated and attended all times. It is the responsibility of the pet owner to provide all necessities. Red cross is on site to provide social assistance needs. Located at 38 Pete’s Lane, Pefferlaw. 705-737-1362
