A Message from Mayor Walter Schummer Honouring National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 2023
"Each year we recognize a very special day in Canada. National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day honours the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of this tragic and painful history in our country and the ongoing impacts of the residential school system is a vital part of our national reconciliation process.
Nobody can, or should, erase history. Our history is our history be it good or bad. One of the benefits from history is to learn from it. To learn from this tragic piece of Canadian history we must understand it.
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is an official day for us to all gather and continue to learn from our history and continue to exercise the act of reconciliation. The acts of reconciliation continue and will continue into our combined future history.
On behalf of The Township of Brock and on behalf of the Council of The Township of Brock I want to thank everyone for recognizing the need and purpose of reconciliation. But more importantly I want to thank everyone for their commitment to continuing the process of reconciliation. I urge everyone to take time and visit the various websites where you can learn more about Truth and Reconciliation and understand and learn from our history as well as understand how we can be a better country in partnership with our Indigenous peoples and cultures."
