Council Highlights July 28, 2025
Council Highlights offer a summary of crucial decisions or agenda items discussed in Council meetings, aiming to give residents a snapshot of the meeting proceedings. The following are highlights from Monday's Council Meeting.
Council was presented with the Climate and Health Vulnerability Assessment report from Durham Region Health. The report outlined the impacts of solar UV radiation and vector-born disease and some of the highlights were:
· Solar UVR levels are highest in Durham Region from April to September between the hours of 11 am and 3 pm. June and July have the highest UVR levels.
· Climate change is expected to increase solar UVR in Durham Region.
· UVR exposure is the leading cause of skin cancer and the leading cause of environmentally acquired cancer in Ontario.
· Vector-born disease includes Lyme Disease and West Nile Virus.
· The highest exposure happens from May to November
· Climate change has expanded the exposure season and vector populations in Durham.
Council has approved the purchase of a new Tandem Axle Snowplow Truck to be paid from the Public Works Fleet Reserve - Capital Reserve Fund. This new vehicle includes a power tilt front plow, noise reducing blade and upgraded plow controls.
Council has approved the use of straight salt on sidewalks, subject to budget approval in 2026. Staff will continue with the Minimum Maintenance Standards while performing winter maintenance operations.
Council received a report on the cost and revenue for the late ice that was extended in Beaverton during spring 2025. Council has directed staff to prepare for late ice to continue for the 2025-2026 season.
Council has directed staff to work with the Beaverton, Cannington and Sunderland Legions to install commemorative Veterans Crosswalks within Brock.
The Clerk advised that no by-election for the Office of the Mayor is required and that Mayor Elect Mike Jubb is hereby acclaimed and would be sworn in as the 20th Mayor for the Township of Brock as of 4:00 pm July 28, 2025.
Council re-instated the September 8th meeting in order to get back to the normal meeting cycle and deal with the vacant Regional Councillor seat.
