Council Highlights October 27, 2025

Council Highlights offer a summary of crucial decisions or agenda items discussed in Council meetings, aiming to give residents a snapshot of the meeting proceedings. The following are highlights from Monday's Council Meeting:

A Public meeting was held to discuss the potential sale of two (2) unopened road allowances:

A Public meeting was held to consider a proposed Official Plan Amendment and Zoning By-law Amendment for On-Farm Diversified Uses and Agriculture-Related Uses. The Region of Durham, in partnership with the Townships of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge, retained a consultant, WSP Canada Inc., to undertake a North Durham Agriculture-related and On-Farm Diversified Uses Study. The purpose of the Study is to recommend policies that enable agriculture-related and on-farm diversified uses. This study also looked at how approval processes can be improved to better support local agriculture and rural economic development. Information pertaining to the proposed amendments is available on the Township’s website. Council heard delegations from members of the Brock Minor Hockey Association, Sunderland Ringette Association, Beaverton Agricultural Society, Sunderland Agricultural Society and comments from members of the public on the impact the early ice would have for the residents and user groups. Council considered a report outlining 4 options and Council has directed staff to proceed with Option #3 “Cannington Arena in 2026-2027 season and onward”.

The following resolution carried by Council includes the following:

  • Staff are directed to proceed with the capital improvements to the Rick MacLeish Memorial Community Centre, to support early ice installation for 2026/2027 season.
  • Council has authorized staff to draw from the Cannington Arena Reserve in order to fund the capital improvements to the Rick MacLeish Memorial Community Centre.
  • Council directed staff to proceed with procuring the capital improvements to the Rick MacLeish Memorial Community Centre.
  • Council requested the Mayor to include in the 2026 budget, the additional staffing costs to support early ice installation for the 2026/2027 season.
  • Updates on the approved works for the Rick MacLeish Memorial Community Centre will be made available when work commences.

A Notice of Motion was passed for the Council of the Corporation of the Township of Brock to formally oppose any decision or consideration to close rural Canada Post branches or eliminate rural mail delivery within the Township. The resolution was forwarded to the Minister responsible for Canada Post, local Members of Parliament, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) and the Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) for their support and advocacy.
