Awards of Merit 2026 Winners

Last night it was an honour to host the second annual Township of Brock Awards of Merit. This event recognizes the invaluable contributions made within our community by many outstanding citizens and volunteers.

Councillor Peter Frank presented the Arts, Heritage and Culture Award to Beaverton Thorah Eldon Historical Society for 50 years of outstanding dedication to preserving and celebrating the history of Beaverton, Thorah, and Eldon Townships. Through the stewardship of artifacts, archives, historic buildings, educational programs, and community events, the Society has kept our local stories alive while fostering a deep appreciation for the people and places that shaped our community. Thank you for your contributions to our community!

Councillor Ron Hodgson presented the Environment and Climate Change Champion Award to the Cannington Horticultural Society. With over 50 years of dedicated environmental stewardship and through the creation and maintenance of public gardens, pollinator-friendly plantings, and vibrant downtown floral displays, the Cannington Horticultural Society has enhanced the natural environment while inspiring community pride. Their commitment to sustainability is reflected in initiatives such as Seedy Sunday and educational programs that promote native plants, biodiversity, water conservation, composting, and environmentally responsible gardening practices. 

Councillor Lynn Campbell presented the Community Services Group or Club Award to the Sunderland Lions Club in recognition of its exceptional commitment to serving and strengthening the Brock community. Through decades of volunteer leadership, the Club has made a lasting impact by supporting community infrastructure, youth development, health initiatives, cultural programs, scholarships, environmental projects, and charitable services for residents of all ages. Their remarkable contribution to the Sunderland Arena project, along with their ongoing support of countless local programs and organizations, reflects an unwavering dedication to improving quality of life and fostering community spirit. The Sunderland Lions Club’s legacy of service, generosity, and leadership makes them a truly deserving recipient of this award. 

Councillor Claire Doble presented the Social Development Award to Candace Dove in recognition of her extraordinary dedication and leadership with the Brock Township Food Bank. For more than 25 years, Candace has devoted countless hours to ensuring individuals and families across Brock have access to essential food support, serving as Director for the past eight years while helping coordinate food distribution, volunteer efforts, and community outreach programs. Her compassionate leadership has been instrumental in providing weekly food assistance, organizing holiday hampers, and supporting residents in times of need.

Regional Councillor Cria Pettingill presented the Sports and Recreation Award to the Brock Rugby Club in recognition of its outstanding contribution to sport, recreation, and community development in Brock Township. Since its founding in 1978, the Club has provided opportunities for athletes of all ages to develop their skills, build confidence, and embrace the values of teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship. With a strong tradition of competitive success and one of the largest youth rugby programs in Ontario, Brock Rugby continues to inspire and engage hundreds of participants each year. Congratulations!

Councillor Angela Canavan presented the Brock Accessibility Award to the Beaverton Town Hall Players in recognition of their ongoing commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all. Through improvements made to create accessible facilities, supportive accommodations for patrons and volunteers, and a dedication to removing barriers to participation, the organization ensures that everyone can enjoy and contribute to the performing arts. Their belief that accessibility should never be an obstacle has enabled individuals of all abilities to engage fully, both on stage and behind the scenes

Councillor Angela Canavan presented the Volunteer of the Year Award to Katie Probst in recognition of her extraordinary lifetime of service to the Brock community. A resident of Brock Township for more than 45 years, Katie has dedicated herself to countless organizations and initiatives, including Community Care Durham, the Brock Community Health Centre, Big Brothers Big Sisters, local food security programs, youth development initiatives, and environmental advocacy efforts. Today, she continues to make reassurance calls for seniors, facilitates an intergenerational pen pal program connecting students and residents, supports local charitable causes, and champions community well-being through active volunteerism and advocacy.
