Reminder: Brocks Winter Operations

plows, sidewalk clearning machine, truck with blow on front

It appears that winter has decided to join us again. In anticipation of arriving snow, Brock would like to remind public of our winter operations related to snow removal.

A little bit about winter operations:  Brock Township maintains over 700 lane km of road and over 26 km of sidewalk.  Our Winter Fleet consists of 3 graders, 9 tandems with plows, 2 pick-ups with plows, and 5 sidewalk units.  We have a compliment of 13 full time staff and 5 casual employees.  Although every winter storm is different, it takes between 5-6 hours to complete a single route.  On a regular day, staff work from 7:00am-3:30pm, but will begin as early as 4am during a winter event.  Brock staff patrol the roads from 4:00am-7:00am daily and when required, operators are called in to respond to the road conditions. If a significant snow event is expected throughout late evening/early morning hours, staff are notified to begin work at 4:00 am without waiting for a road patrol call-in. Additionally, if required, staff will continue to work past regular hours but maintain the Employee Standards Act and Ontario Regulation 555/06 Hours of Work under the Highway Traffic Act.

FAQ’s

Brock Township uses a 4% pickled sand/salt mix as is best practice for both gravel and hard surfaced roads.

As mentioned, routes take between 5-6 hours to complete and it may have been completed prior to additional snowfall.  Rest assured crews will be back again later that day or the very next day once snow has stopped.

Residents can assist with the snow clearing by;

  • keeping vehicles off the road
  • give plows space to operate
  • do not blow or push snow out onto the roadway
  • clear snow away from hydrants and catch basins
  • be patient while crews work to clear your road
  • stay off the road if travel is not necessary

Please note the Township of Brock follows and usually exceeds the Minimum Maintenance Standards regulation that requires service levels as shown below:

Public Works staff are the first responders during significant winter events. They face challenging conditions with limited visibility, slippery roads, and extreme cold conditions. Staff should be commended for their dedication and service.
