Special Council Meeting April 17, 2026 - Road Maintenance

Dear Residents and Travellers in Brock Township, 

We hear you. We understand the frustration from our residents.  

Some may be wondering why our roads haven’t been addressed yet. The main reason is that grading depends on a few factors, with weather being the most important. 

This spring has been particularly challenging weather-wise, with ongoing cold snaps, fluctuating temperatures, and LOTS of rainfall. Over the past two weeks, our area has experienced extreme rainfall totaling over 100 mm. 

 For context, the average rainfall for the month of April is approximately 59.3 mm. This year’s precipitation within a short time frame has exceeded that average, significantly impacting our maintenance schedule. 

Please be assured that Township staff are actively monitoring road conditions and have a plan in place to proceed with maintenance as soon as weather conditions allow. Our goal is to complete work safely, effectively, and in a manner that provides lasting improvements, while being responsible with taxpayer’s money. 

Today, Council has supported staff by dedicating an additional $100,000 to assist with purchasing more gravel, ditching, brushing, berming and shouldering, and employee overtime for roads personnel. These funds have no impact on the 2026 budget or the reserves, as the funds are reallocated from other capital projects that have come in under budget. 

Weather permitting, and barring any equipment failure, staff are hopeful that a majority of the gravel roads will be addressed by the end of next week. In the meantime, we kindly ask all those traveling on our rural roads to use caution and adjust driving habits to current conditions. We also join you in hoping that Mother Nature grants us a much-needed break from the rain.
