Tires not accepted at Waste Management Facilities until further notice
The Region of Durham is suspending the acceptance of tires at all Waste Management Facilities (WMFs) due to an overstock.
When: Effective immediately until further notice. The suspension on the acceptance of tires will be in place until current site stockpiles are reduced.
Where: The Region’s WMFs in Oshawa, Scugog and Brock.
Why: To protect public safety, maintain regulatory compliance and ensure continued operation of our facilities. During the suspension, residents and businesses are encouraged to store tires if possible until the suspension is lifted, or visit the Resource Productivity & Recovery Authority’s website for recycling locations at rpra.ca/where-to-recycle.
Note: The Region’s WMFs participate in the Used Tire Program Plan under the Waste Diversion Act. Each facility’s Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) establishes limits on storage volumes, handling practices, and environmental protections for tires. The Region relies on a network of third-party tire program haulers and processors to remove and recycle tires collected at its facilities. However, due to limitations of the current Used Tires Program Plan, used tires are being generated faster than these haulers and processors are removing them for processing. The result is an increasing stockpile of tires at the Region’s WMFs.
