Elections

The Office of the Mayor was declared vacant by Council on Monday June 9, 2025 following the resignation of Mayor Walter Schummer. The municipality is required to hold a by-election for the position in accordance with the Municipal Act and Municipal Elections Act

Over the next few weeks, additional information will be added to this page to support voters and interested candidates. 

Important Dates

  • Nominations for Office of the Mayor will open on Monday July 7, 2025 at 8:30 a.m. 
  • Nominations will close on Friday July 25, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. 

Our election will be simple: 6 days, 3 ways

  • Advanced Voting will take place on September 3rd-8th
  • By-election will be held on Monday September 8

Information for Voters

In order to vote in the upcoming by-election, you must be on the Municipal Voters' list. 

A person is entitled to vote in a municipal election if they are a qualified elector. That means, you must be:

  • A resident of the Township of Brock, or an owner or tenant of land in the Township, or the spouse of such an owner or tenant;
  • A Canadian citizen;
  • At least 18 years old; and
  • Not prohibited from voting by law

If you are not a resident of the Township of Brock, to vote for a School Board Trustee, you must be:

  • An owner or tenant of residential property in the area of jurisdiction of the school board, who does not support any other board

Who cannot vote?

The following are prohibited from voting in a municipal election:

  • Serving a sentence of imprisonment in a penal or correctional institution
  • A corporation
  • Acting as executor or trustee or in another representative capacity, except as a voting proxy
  • Convicted of a corrupt practice described in section 90(3) of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996

As a Canadian citizen, voting is your right and responsibility. Your community is shaped by the outcome of an election.

The individual who is elected takes part in making many important decisions including how tax dollars are spent in your community.

Please check to see if your name is on the Voters List.

If you receive a message that you are not on the list, please complete the Application to Amend the Voters’ List (EL 15 form) and bring it with you to the Municipal Office or Voting Assistance Centre. Advanced voting will take place on September 3rd - 8th, 2025. The formal by-election day is Monday September 8, 2025. 

Voting for the 2025 by-election can be conducted by internet, telephone or by visiting a Voter Assistance Centre and requesting a ballot-on-demand.  

All eligible electors will receive a Voter Information letter in the mail. 

  • Keep the Voting Information letter in a safe place until voting opens on September 3, 2025. 
  • You will have 6 days to vote.
  • Follow the instructions in your Voter Information letter. There are specific instructions for voting online and by telephone. Both of which will require the PIN number within your personalized letter. 
  • If you require assistance, you may bring your Voter Information letter to any Voter Assistance Centre during the voting period (September 4, 5, 6, and 8, 2025). 

During the advanced voting period and on voting day, electors may attend any of the following Voter Assistance Centres for help during the hours identified: 

  1. Township of Brock Municipal Office, 1 Cameron Street East, Cannington
  2. Foster Hewitt Memorial Arena Auditorium, 176 Main Street, Beaverton
  3. Station 8-1, Sunderland Fire Hall, 217 River Street, Sunderland
  • Thursday September 4, 2025 - 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. 
  • Friday September 5, 2025 - 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Saturday September 6, 2025 - 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
  • Monday September 8, 2025 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Special Advanced Poll for Long Term Care Residents Only (September 3, 2025)

  1. Lakeview Manor, 133 Main Street, Beaverton (for residents only)
  2. Bon Air, 131 Laidlaw Street, South, Cannington (for residents only)

Assistance will be provided if you received a Voter Information Letter and need help voting, if you did not receive a Voter Information Letter or if your Voter Information Letter has errors and needs to be corrected. 

You are not required to attend a Voter Assistance Centre if you intended to cast your ballot online or by telephone.

If you would like to remove yourself or a family member who is deceased, please complete the Application to Amend the Voters' List Form, and attend the Clerk's Office at 1 Cameron Street East during regular business hours. (Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.)


If you have received a Voting PIN Letter from a Municipal Election for someone who has moved, or is no longer a resident at your address, it is extremely important that you return that letter, unopened, in the mail. Mark on the envelope "Return to Sender - Moved" or "Return to Sender - Deceased" , and elections staff will deactivate the PIN and attempt to verify the change once it is received back in the mail.

Information for Candidates

 A person is entitled to be a candidate for Mayor or Councillor if he or she:

  • Is a resident of the Township of Brock, or an owner or tenant of land in the Township of Brock, or the spouse of such an owner or tenant;
  • Is a Canadian citizen;
  • Is at least 18 years old; and
  • Is not legally prohibited from voting

  • An employee of the municipality unless they take an unpaid leave of absence beginning the day they are nominated and resign if elected to the office
  • A judge of any court
  • A member of the Provincial Legislature, the Federal House of Commons or Senate who has not resigned from their office by the close of nominations. Proof of resignation must be provided by the close of nominations or the Clerk will not certify the nomination
  • A candidate who failed to file the necessary financial statement(s) in the last municipal election or by-election.

Interested parties are required to file the following information with the Returning Officer, beginning Monday July 7, 2025 at 8:30 a.m. Nominations will close on Friday July 25, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. All documentation must be original, hard copies. 

Frequently Asked Questions

The By-Election is to elect a new Mayor after the resignation of Walter Schummer in May of 2025. It will be held over 6 days from Wednesday September 3, 2025 to Monday September 8, 2025 at 8:00 p.m.

Technically, our entire election is advance voting. For the Mayoral By-Election, you will have 6 days to vote by Internet or telephone remotely or by requesting a ballot on demand in person from Wednesday September 3rd to Monday September 8, 2025 at 8:00 pm.

Electors may cast their electronic votes anytime of the day during the voting period.

Yes. Qualified electors may vote in each municipality in Ontario that they qualify as an elector, however they may only vote for each office once.

Yes. Qualified electors may vote in each municipality in Ontario that they own property. If you are an owner of a property (or their spouse), you may qualify as an elector, and you will receive a Voting PIN Letter in the mail so that you can vote from your home.

Trailer owners in campgrounds are tenants of the campground; therefore they are potentially eligible electors.

 

No. You must complete the voting by either Internet, Telephone or Ballot on Demand on your own. That being said, you may offer assistance to friends and family, with their permission, but ultimately the secrecy of the ballot is paramount, and you must not interfere with the voting process. Voter Assistance Centres will also be set up for our staff to assist if you have any questions. 

Note: It is an offence to utilize another elector's PIN number and thereby vote multiple times.

Certified Candidates will be listed on the website along with their contact information. At their direction, candidates may supply an address, phone number, or an email to be posted on the City's website. To find out about a candidate’s platform, you must contact the candidate or his or her campaign headquarters directly.

At the close of voting on September 8, 2025 at 8:00pm, the totals will be electronically tabulated by a central computer and compiled. The results will be displayed on the Township website.
